Types and Levels of Extension

Types of Extensions and Three Levels of Extensions.

There are some types of Extensions :

Generic Top - level Domains(gTLDs): These are most common and widely used domain extensions, not tied to any specific country and organisation.

E.g.,  
  • .com(originally for commercial entities, not used broadly)
  • .org(originally non-profit organizations, now used broadly)
  • .net(originally for network organizations, now used broadly)

Country Code Top - level Domains(ccTLDs): These extensions represents specific countries and regions.

E.g.,  
  • .in(India) 
  • .us(United States)
  • .ca(Canada).cn (China)

Sponsored Top-level Domains(sTLDs):  These extensions are restricted to use by specific organization or entities.

E.g.,  
  • .gov(Government)
  • .edu(Education)
  • .int(Intergovernmental organizations)

The Three Levels of Domain Name Extension are :

Top - level Domain(TLD): This is the final part of a domain like “.com”, “.org”, “.net”, or a country code like “.in”, “.us”, and “.uk”.

Second - level Domain(SLD): This is the domain name itself like “example” in “example.com”.

Third - level Domain(Subdomain): This is an optional part comes before the second-level domain like “blog” in “blog.example.com”. Subdomains are used to organize content or create different sections of a website.
